Encaustic is an art form that dates back to Ancient Egypt and Medieval Europe. It is made by melting wax with colored pigments and manipulating it with brushes and other tools both while the wax is warm and pliant as well as when it is cold and hard. The technique allows for painting as well as sculpting and offers the opportunity for the artist to encase and collage other materials into endlessly accreting layers. My work with this technique is a natural extension of the collaging and layering I do in my abstract mixed media paintings.
