DIGITAL MURALS

digital mural projects have pushed me to explore digital media beyond my ipad drawings. they have provided me the opportunity to expand how i use technology to translate my work into forms that can be shared with broad audiences. these projects have been stepping stones, changing the way i think about the scale of my art, opening doors to new ways of engaging viewers, and paving the way towards new kinds of collectors and collaborators.

this huge public art project was created in collaboration with jbg smith, and was intended to give a very tired development a quick face lift in order to entice a sale. i and one other artist were each assigned two different twelve story buildings and were asked to create art that could translate to this scale. one of my designs was created by translating a mixed media painting in a digital format, the other design was entirely created digitally, using photoshop to modify the drawing done originally on my ipad. it was a great opportunity to create and experience art on that scale.

this project, on view in 2018, was created in collaboration with mark development and the new art center, both in newton, ma. the idea was to activate the perimeter fencing during a long construction project. chuck holtzman and i were each given the opportunity to engage a section. my piece, “take a moment to think about what unites us,” is a digitally painted and collaged image of one of my textile works. i wanted to create something that would highlight the potential for positive change in a public space. the result is an energetic fusion between the lush colors of the natural world, and the more orderly geometry of the built world. the artwork highlights the evolution happening behind the fence instead of hiding it.
